Niels Jacobus Nieuwenhuizen is a senior scientist of The New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research Limited (PFR). He graduated from Wageningen Agricultural University in 1995, and received his PhD in The University of Auckland in 2016. He came to New Zealand in 1995, worked in Genesis Research and AgriGenesis Research from 1995 to 2004 in the area of forestry biotechnology genomics of Pine and Eucalyptus. From 2005 untill now, he is working at the New Zealand institute for Plant and Food Research limited (PFR previously called HortResearch). Dr. Nieuwenhuizen is now a senior scientist and part of the Fruit Quality Team led by Dr. Ross Atkinson and published more than 20 papers during his working years at PFR. His current research mainly focusses on understanding aroma pathways in horticultural crops, the hormonal and transcriptional regulation of fruit ripening in apple and kiwifruit and the regulation of flavour and aroma biosynthesis, transcriptomics of Pseudomonas syringae pv. Actinidiae (psa) infection of kiwifruit and characterising secondary metabolite genes in hops.
